This FETC (general certificate), known as the National Senior Certificate when offered in schools. It is aimed at learners in grade 12. These learners leave schooling either for further learning or employment in various work places. The FETC (general) is the qualification awarded to learners who achieve the exit level learning outcomes stipulated in the national curriculum statement.

Purpose and Rationale of Qualification
To provide learners with are recognized certificate at the first exit point from compulsory GETC Schooling that will allow them access to qualifications at the further education and training level. Passing grade 10 enables access of learners to grade 11. (NCS)
Exit Level Outcomes
Learners will gain competencies in basic communication, languages and literacy skills; values in home languages, cultures and literacy will be developed in a multi-cultural country context; Skills in mathematical literacy, natural science, human and social sciences, arts and culture, life orientation and in economics and management sciences will be developed.
